Tetons at Sunrise, Grand
Teton National Park

This image was taken at Oxbow Bend within
Grand Teton National Park
at sunrise. On route to setup for this image my wife had spotted a
grizzly bear only a few yards from the highway. The choice was stop and
attempt to capture an image of the bear or press on to Oxbow Bend for a
sunrise shot. Oxbow Bend won out, and I was rewarded with this image.
The picture was taken just as the sun had reached the tip of Grand Teton
mountain, I was anticipating that the entire range would shortly be
bathed in a warm pink glow. Unfortunately there was too much cloud in
the sky that blocked the sun reaching further down the mountains, by the
time the sun cleared the clouds it had lost its warming glow. However,
this is still one of my favourite images since it conveys a sense of
stillness and tranquility.
This image was captured with FujuChrome Velvia 100 at around 5.30am
during the month of June. Even in June it was below freezing before
dawn, and still cold enough to drain
my camera's batteries in a matter of minutes. Fortunately I was well
prepared with plenty of spares. Whilst I was setting up for this image a
number of wolves could be seen running up and down the left hand bank of
snake river.
